Most local pharmacies have medication disposal programs and will accept unused or expired medications. You can take the medications directly to the pharmacy and they will handle the disposal safely.

It may be a good idea to call ahead to check if they offer the disposal program.

Some GP surgeries also accept unused medications for disposal. It’s worth giving your surgery a call to see if they offer this service.

If the deceased was receiving hospital care the hospital pharmacy may accept unused medications for disposal, contact the hospital switchboard to check their policy.

It’s important not to dispose of medications in your regular rubbish bins or down the drain, as this can be harmful to the environment and public health.
